Today I went to see the current exhibition in the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt called “PLAYBOY ARCHITECTURE 1953–1979″. It’s about how Playboy pictorials influenced the society, helped to from and establish the image of a cool, single male and a lifestyle inspired by freedom, architecture and pleasure. It’s similar to what you can see incorporated in the figure of James Bond. Some of the cool places the pictorials were shot in, cool houses with crazy architecture and exaggerated homes are shown.
The best part of the exhibit is a newsstand with original copies of all American Playboy magazines from 1953 until end of 1980 (and an online archive that goes until 2009). I was very much interested in seeing the old pictorials. And I was astonished to see how inhibited our society is today. The 1970s and 1980s pictorials often were much more sexual than today. Yet always with style and a matter of course. Some issues were over 400 pages and even the stories were much more about sex and erotism.
I hope that our society finds the way back to being more open about displaying sensuality.
Here are some images I took at the exhibition showing nice covers. Feel free to have a look for yourself in Frankfurt until April, 20th 2014.
